While
we are best known for what many consider to be among
the most stunning large yachts in existence, we
happily design smaller boats as well. We work to make sure that every
design is a
special one, believing as we do that there is no excuse for an
unattractive
boat. We also offer related design services for existing vessels, from
small
changes to complete refits.
______
New
Designs
Beginning with
preliminary design studies, we work with the client
to develop conceptual drawings that define general arrangement, deck
layout,
profile or sail plan, and hull geometry. These are discussed, modified
and
rediscussed until owner satisfaction is achieved. We can prepare the
complete
design including interior and exterior styling, or we can work
constructively
with a specialist interior designer. We can also arrange for art work
that
gives a visual impression of the completed vessel from several vantage
points. We may also include computational velocity predictions for both
sail and
power yacht designs at this time. We can also initiate towing tank
model tests,
if desired.
Upon owner
approval of
preliminary design studies, we prepare a "bid package", which
includes the preliminary design with the addition of some general
construction
information as well as written specifications. Sometimes the
specifications are
prepared collaboratively with the owner’s representative or
project manager.
Upon completion these are submitted to selected yards for estimates, or
bids,
depending on the situation.
If the project
is to proceed, we then begin preparation of the
documentation for construction. The completeness of the provided
documentation
varies widely with the selected yard. The reason being, the amount of
in-house
engineering and drafting capability for the preparation of shop
drawings varies
greatly between yards, from absolutely none to extensive. Our provided
documentation includes hand drawings, 3D computer models of hull and
deck, as
well as both 2D and 3D CAD drawings. In some cases we
have provided full-size mylars for direct
construction. We have also provided 3D computer models for direct
machining of
hull and deck plugs, as well as temporary molds for composite
construction with
the SCRIMP process.
We also work
with classification societies, if the vessel is to be
classed or built under survey. We have had our designs built under
Lloyds
Register of Shipping, Germanischer Lloyd, ABS, and RINA. Our wood-epoxy
designs
have been approved by all three.
Redesign
We
can provide design work for an
existing vessel on any of the aspects that make up a new design. This
includes
a completely or partially redesigned interior, a new rig, a
repowering, or any structural design. At all times, we strive for the
elegance and integrity our new designs are known
for.
We can also provide general Naval Architecture
services, such as stability testing
and the preparation of Stability Booklets, velocity prediction for sail
and power yachts, or
structural review.
