The Salt Bay Skiff is a classy little boat for amateur builders. |
|
|
 |
The
Salt Bay Skiff
was intended for the designer's own use, to be easy and
relatively cheap to build but to produce a boat worth having. She was winner of WoodenBoat Magazine's Family Boatbuilding
Design Contest in November 2006, and is featured in WoodenBoat's
"Getting Started in Boats" supplements, Volumes 7 and 8, included with WB issues 199 and 200. |
| She sails and rows easily at
moderate speeds: she's a lively, safe and comfortable cruising boat, not a
high-strung racer or a heavy work boat. Her lines are simple and elegant. |
 |

|
At 80 to 90 lbs
hull weight, she is easily cartoppable. With a pair of wheels (here salvaged from a rummage-sale golf bag) clamped
to the transom, one adult can readily trundle her around and get her up on the rack. |
| She
is ideal for amateur construction, and although
general woodworking experience is helpful, a reasonably intelligent
beginner can build her successfully with a minimum of normal home-shop
tools. |

|

|
There are some nice little
elegant details you can add that dress her up but aren't hard to do, like sculpted knees and a curved, slatted stern seat.
Please see the Q&A Page for answers to some questions and comments by previous builders. |
|
Her plans and building instructions are quite complete, having been
revised through the building of several boats, and include full-size
patterns for the frames that control hull shape, and all details. The
six sheets of plans, with building instructions and email support as
needed, are included
with the right to build one boat, which is $50 by check or money order
